Poole 10k and the Puddletown Plod 20k

Since the cancelled Maxi Race, I’ve managed to get two local races in, the Poole 10k and Puddletown Plod 20k.

The Poole 10k is part of the Poole Festival of Running and has become one of the biggest 10k races in the south. It is a two lap route taking in Poole and Whitecliff Park and is always well organised. It’s actually a great event to bring the whole family along to as they have a 5k and children’s fun run, stands and a bouncy castle set up for the kids. The race starts at 2pm, not the easiest time to run on a Sunday, and the weather was fairly warm. I went out too fast on the first lap and paid for it big time on the second lap. Luckily fellow Westbourne RC runner John found me walking at the last water stop and encouraged me on to the finish with a time of just over 49 minutes.

The Puddletown Plod is part of the Dorset Road Race League and is a 20k ‘undulating’ loop around the rural lanes of Puddletown. Race HQ was the local school which had parking, showers and importantly a cake stand! I thought the whole race was really well organised. There were five water stops and loads of marshals directing runners and generally being supportive. I set off at a very steady pace and kept fairly consistent throughout the race. I finished in just under 1hr45 and really enjoyed myself. It was particularly nice to run into the finish and have Kris and Amy cheering me on (and receive a technical t-shirt and ice lolly for my efforts). Definitely a race to put in the calendar for next year.

Next up is the Mont Blanc 80km/50m next Friday. I am properly terrified of this race. Starting at 4am, I will be heading straight up to 2525 metres and dragging my undertrained legs over 50 miles of mountain trails around Chamonix. Wish me luck, I will need every ounce of it!

(Those of you that know me will know that I rarely look at the route profile before I do a race. This is why!)
